2008 Academy Boat Policy

Notice: This boat policy applies to all Pettipaug Sailing Academy (PSA) students, regardless of whether they are boat owners or not, and all students will be responsible for adhering to these standards.

1) The Pettipaug Sailing Academy is a non-profit educational institution, which is self-insured for damage to boats while they are used for classes. Whereas boat owners are responsible for catastrophic loss or damage to their boats (e.g. theft, flood, lightning, etc.), Pettipaug Sailing Academy will make every attempt to maintain all boats, and to take care of damage and loss due to student use as quickly and efficiently as possible. However, if the Academy Director determines that willful or negligent damage or loss occurred that could have been avoided, the skipper or his family will be obliged to pay for the repairs or replacement. Those in disagreement with the decision of the Director may appeal to the Vice Commodore who is responsible for PSA.

2) A family donating a boat to be used by themselves and others in the PSA program will be entitled to tuition refunds as described in
A note about Boat Ownership. If desired and appropriate, the owner will be able to sail his or her boat during the classes he or she attends. The boat will be used during all PSA sessions.

3) A family providing a boat to be used solely by their child or children will not be entitled to any tuition refund or boat maintenance. The owner will be allowed to occupy his or her boat during the classes he or she attends. The boat will not be used in the owner’s absence.

4) Since participation in PSA entitles everyone the opportunity to skipper a boat regardless of their boat ownership status, there may be situations when a boat owner will be asked to surrender the tiller and crew in his or her boat.

5) All Blue Jays will be kept on moorings from Monday through Friday with no exceptions. Any Blue Jay owner may request Friday hauling and Monday launching. For weekend hauling, the owner will be asked to supply appropriate trailer/dolly and lifting harness.

6) Boat owners may be asked to loan their boats to PSA students for use in regattas. Any such use is above and beyond the use described in the tuition refund program. The decision is up to the discretion of the boat owner and a “no loan” answer will in no way alter the benefits of the loan/refund agreement. If a boat is loaned for regatta use, the owner must sign a “Boat Loan Agreement”. These forms are available from the Program director or the Racing Coach.

Boats For Sale

The Academy serves as a clearinghouse for the purchase and sale of Optimists, Blue Jays, and C420s, (the boat types used in the program). For further information about boats currently available for sale, or if you have a boat to sell, call Toby Doyle at 767-7383. Used Optimists have sold for $800-$1600, depending on condition. Used C420s and Blue Jays have sold for $800-$3000, depending on condition. No guarantee of sales or prices is implied.

Adopt a Blue Jay

PSA has Blue Jay sailboats which have been donated to the program. If you would like to adopt a boat and assume responsibility for it's repair and maintenance, upon completion of needed repairs, the boat would be entered in the sailing program and you would receive the normal tuition refund for each child in the program. After two years of program use you would become owner of the boat. Call Paul Risseeuw at 767-1995 (or email: prisseeuw@aol.com) for more details.
