Powerboat Operation & Handling Course

9 hours of on-the-water, hands-on training on how to operate small powerboats

This is a “Drivers Ed” course for powerboats. You and/or your child will learn how to safely operate both wheel and tiller steering, both 2 cycle and 4 cycle outboard engines, both manual and electric start, how to dock properly, high speed, slow speed and confined space maneuvering, man-overboard recovery, radio operation, basic rules-of-the-road, basic navigation, anchoring and many other skills. These maneuvers will actually be performed in the boats by each student, not just discussed in a classroom.

Satisfactory completion of this course qualifies you for the Connecticut State Boating Certificate. If you already have your State Certificate, the hands-on operations will greatly improve your powerboating skills.

Instructors are US Sailing certified Powerboat Instructors

Courses are open to adults and children, with a minimum age of 12. Each course is limited to 8 students (two students per boat).

Pettipaug YC membership is not required.

Powerboats will be provided by Pettipaug YC (Boston Whalers and Hard Bottom Inflatables with 15 to 50 horsepower outboards).

Courses will be held at Pettipaug YC in Essex, CT, on the Connecticut River, from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm.

Tuition $150.00 ($125.00 for each additional family member) Payable to “Pettipaug Sailing Academy”

Registration: First paid, first enrolled.

Additional courses may be scheduled, so if you can’t make one of these, please let us know of your interest so we can plan accordingly.
